Choosing the right coffee table for your living room depends on the size and layout of the space, your sofa dimensions and how you plan to use the table. The right size coffee table should feel proportionate to your sofa without restricting movement around the living room. As a general guide, a coffee table around two-thirds the length of your sofa can create a balanced appearance, although your room layout and available floor space should also be considered.

A coffee table should generally be around the same height as your sofa seat or slightly lower to make it comfortable to reach when seated. The ideal coffee table height will depend on the proportions of your sofa and how you intend to use the table.

Round and oval coffee tables can work particularly well in small living rooms because their curved edges can make it easier to move through compact spaces. Small rectangular and nesting coffee tables can also be practical, so the best coffee table shape will depend on your sofa arrangement and available floor space.

Your coffee table can complement side tables, console tables, TV units and other occasional furniture while still introducing contrasting texture or shape.
